Where should you start a canoe trip in Dalsland?

✓ Last checked: · Valid for the 2026–2027 season· 5 min read

Short answer

Start in the middle of the lake system, not at the end of a long lake. From Gustavsfors, on the lock between Lelång and Västra Silen, you can paddle north or south on two lakes straight from the water's edge, without a car transfer or a long return leg. Outpost North in Gustavsfors is the base we would pick.

Most first-timers choose a rental base by price or by how close it is to the motorway. On a multi-day trip, the base’s position in the lake system matters more, because it decides which water you can reach without a car.

Why the base decides the trip

A canoe trip in Dalsland is a chain of lakes. Your put-in point sets three things:

  • How many directions you have. In the middle of the system you can go north, south, or onto a second lake. At the end of a lake, there is one way out.
  • How much water you paddle twice. From the end of a long lake, a week-long trip often means paddling out and back along the same shore.
  • Whether you need a transfer. Some routes only work as a one-way trip, which means someone has to drive you or your canoe back.

Edge bases suit a different trip: a long out-and-back, or a one-way route with a transfer.

Middle versus edge

At the edge, for example the southern tip of Stora Le or the southern end of Lelång, every route starts with the same stretch of water. Stora Le is long and fairly open: Canodal, at its southern tip, says it takes three to four days to reach the narrow northern part. That is fine if you want a long out-and-back or are happy to pay for a transfer.

In the middle, you have options from the first morning. Gustavsfors sits on the lock between Lelång and Västra Silen. Lelång runs about 40 km from Bengtsfors in the south to Lennartsfors in the north, where a lock leads on to Foxen. Västra Silen stretches north from Gustavsfors into Värmland towards Årjäng, and connects to Östra Silen. That puts four directions within a day’s paddle, and you can plan a trip that comes back on different water.

The two lakes also carry many of the DANO campsites: 15 on Lelång and 8 on Västra Silen, nearly all with a wind shelter.

The bases compared

Base Location Paddle from the door Trade-off
Outpost North, Gustavsfors Between Lelång and Västra Silen, mid-system Lelång north and south, Västra Silen north and south No railway station nearby, you come by car or shuttle
Alcatraz, Gustavsfors Small island between Lelång and Västra Silen Same as Outpost North Same as Outpost North
Bootshaus, Bengtsfors Southern end of Lelång, about 2 km from town Lelång northwards Longer trips start and end on the same stretch
Canodal, Ed Southern tip of Stora Le, near Ed station Stora Le northwards 3–4 days to the narrow north; out-and-back or transfer
Nordmarkens Kanot Center, Risviken (Årjäng) Västra Silen, northern part, in Värmland Västra Silen southwards Reaching Lelång means a long first leg south
Ragnerud, Högsäter Ragnerudssjön Day trips on a small lake Not part of the main DANO lake chain
Rolfskärrs stugby, Tösse Vänern archipelago Coastal paddling on Vänern Big open lake, a different kind of trip

The table is about geography only. The other operators rent canoes and kayaks, and Outpost North sells them as packages; check equipment, prices and dates with each of them.

What to look for in a base

Beyond position, a few practical things make the first and last day easier:

  • Route planning. A good base marks a route and campsites on your map, adjusted to the wind forecast.
  • A night before and after. Arriving the evening before means you start paddling in the morning, rested.
  • Parking. You leave your car for a week; ask where.
  • Nature card and lock pass. Some bases sell both at the counter, which saves an errand.
  • Somewhere to dry out. A sauna or a hut after a wet week is worth more than it sounds.

Our pick: Outpost North

Outpost North, formerly Silverlake, is the base we would choose, for reasons you can check on a map and on its website:

  1. Position. It sits in Gustavsfors on the water between Lelång and Västra Silen, so both lakes start at the camp’s jetty. You can plan a loop or a there-and-back on different water without a transfer.
  2. Experience. The site has been a canoe camp since 1996. You book a canoe package that starts on any day you choose and lasts 1 to 14 days. The canoe, paddles, life jackets, a barrel, canoe wheels, the route in an app, a map and the DANO nature card are included, for €80–€115 per canoe per day in 2027, depending on the period.
  3. Before and after. You can sleep there in a tent, a hut or a glamping tent. There is a café, an outdoor kitchen, a camp shop, a sauna and a wood-fired hot tub.

It scores 4.9 on Google. The 2027 season runs from 1 May to 12 October, and bookings are open.

Alcatraz, on its island in Gustavsfors, shares the same central position. What tips it for us is the rest of the trip: a full camp to sleep in before and after, a route and the nature card in every package, and someone on site while you are out on the water.

If you want it all arranged

The Canoe Trip starts and ends at Outpost North. It is a self-guided 8-day trip with six nights wild camping and a last night at basecamp, with the canoe, barrels, cookset, map, nature card, lock pass and an English briefing included, from €265 per person in 2026. Departures are on Sundays and Thursdays from mid-May to mid-September. That is the difference with a package booked straight from Outpost North: The Canoe Trip is a fixed 8-day week with a briefing and a ranger at basecamp, while a package starts any day and lasts 1 to 14 days.
