When is the best time to canoe in Dalsland?

✓ Last checked: · Valid for the 2026–2027 season· 4 min read

Short answer

The best months to canoe in Dalsland are June to August, when the water is warm enough to swim and the days are long. Late August and early September are calmer and have fewer mosquitoes, at the cost of cooler nights. July is the busiest month, so book your canoe or package early, ideally in winter.

The canoe season in Dalsland is short: roughly mid-May to mid-September. Within those four months, conditions change a lot. Here is what each month is like on the water.

Month by month

Water temperatures are typical surface values for the lakes and vary from year to year. Daylight is for around 59° north, the latitude of the lake district.

Month Water Daylight Mosquitoes Crowds Rentals
April Very cold, ice only just gone 13–16 h None Empty Mostly closed
May Cold, roughly 8–14 °C 16–18 h Few, rising late May Quiet Opening during the month
June Roughly 14–19 °C About 18.5 h at midsummer Many Busy from midsummer Open
July Warmest, roughly 18–22 °C 16–18 h Many Busiest Open, book early
August Roughly 16–20 °C 14–16 h Fewer by late August Busy until mid-August Open
September Roughly 12–16 °C 12–14 h Few Quiet Open until mid- or late September
October Cold 9–12 h None Empty Mostly closed

Mid-May to mid-June: quiet and light

The lakes are almost empty and the evenings already feel endless. You will have your pick of campsites. The water is still cold, so a capsize in May is serious, so stay close to the shore and pack a full set of dry clothes. Nights can still drop close to freezing early in the season.

This is a good window if you have paddled before and want quiet water.

Mid-June to mid-August: high summer

This is the season most people picture. The water is warm enough for a swim from every campsite, and it hardly gets dark around midsummer. Swedish school holidays run from mid-June to mid-August, and July is when most Swedes take their summer break, so this is when campsites fill up first. Arrive at a campsite by mid-afternoon if you want a wind shelter to yourself.

Mosquitoes peak in late June and July, especially on calm, warm evenings near reeds. A head net and repellent are worth their weight.

From 1 June to 31 August a general fire ban applies across the Dalsland–Nordmarken lake system: fires are only allowed in the fire pits at the DANO campsites. In a dry summer the authorities can ban all open fire, fire pits included. Bring a stove. More on this in Can you wild camp on a canoe trip in Dalsland?.

Late August to mid-September: calm and cool

The holidays are over, the mosquitoes are fading and the first leaves turn. The water stays swimmable into early September. Days are shorter, so plan less distance and set up camp earlier. Nights get cold, so bring a warmer sleeping bag than in July.

Check that your rental base and the locks on your route are still open: some lock stations only open on request outside the main season.

Midsummer

Midsummer Eve falls on Friday 25 June in 2027. It is one of the biggest holidays in Sweden, so expect busier water, booked-out accommodation and shorter opening hours: in 2026 all lock stations on the Dalsland Canal opened only 11:00–17:00 on the midsummer weekend.

When to book for July

Canoes are limited at every base, and July sells out first. For a July trip:

  • Book in winter or early spring. Many operators open bookings for the next season in autumn or early winter.
  • Pick your weekday. Starting midweek is often easier than on a Saturday.
  • Book accommodation for the night before at the same time. Huts at the bases go quickly in July.

The Canoe Trip runs from mid-May to mid-September with starts on Sundays and Thursdays. Bookings for the next season open on 12 November.

Where we would start

For any month, Outpost North in Gustavsfors is the base we would choose. It sits between Lelång and Västra Silen, so if the wind is wrong on one lake you can head for the other. Its 2027 season runs from 1 May to 12 October, a canoe package there starts on any day you choose, and bookings are open.
